I love growing plants, you guys.  Some folk buy lots of shoes or bull whips or pets; I buy plants.  I have a whole gaggle of house plants in my apartment and window space is sparse so I picked up an old, ugly (yet functional) plant stand at a vintage market last fall. You can see it in action here.  I have had intentions to beautify it from the beginning but only got around to it last week.

Tools -

  • Spray paint – I used a yellow gloss
  • Interior satin – in a creamy matte to contrast with the glossy yellow
  • Paint brushes for detail work
  • Tape and newspaper for paint control

It took about 6 coats of yellow spray paint to achieve a uniform color.  Then a little patience and a steady hand for the trim.  I think the cream trim is adorable.  The whole thing came out Pleasentville as hell.  I really like the results.

Eat your hearts out,

It’s been a minute, eh?  New year, new excuses not to blog, I’m sure you all understand…

As you may recall, the man friend and I have fearlessly resolved to not eat out for the entire month of January and it’s been going mostly swimmingly.  We did include one caveat for special events and we have had to break TWICE!  Japanese food with a friend from outta town and steak with my delightfully pregnant friend (when a pregnant lady wants to go out for meat candy YOU DO NOT SAY NO). In atonement we decided to tack an extra week on, extending the joys of “Eat-In January” to February thus making up for our delicious sins.

I really should have been documenting our culinary adventures of the month, but I get so wrapped up in cooking that I forget how much I love to shoot food porn.  Sads.

“Eat-In January” has led to an enormous amount of homebody-ism SOOOO…  since I can’t really show you what I’ve been eating I can at least show you where I’ve been eating it.  Almost evens out rrriiiiggghhhttttt???  It’s a conciliatory offering mm-kay:

Placated, aren’t you.  I hope to Jeebus you ate your lilly hearts out,

As I mentioned in my last post, I threw a little NYE bash at the Shangri-Lounge.  I feel my efforts were met with wild success:  2011 was rung in with good friends, hors d’oeuvres, a glitter cannon, dancing, cup-and-ball, list making, fire crackers and bottles and bottles of champagne.  New years day hangovers were then soothed with an elaborate pajama-fest filled with pillows, snuggles, snuggies, m&ms and the viewing of 2 cinematic masterpieces: Clue and Inception.  Plus, a good luck smorgasbord of black eyed peas, greens and roasted pork loin and potatoes (SO GOOD).  Since it was so fun last time I made SOME MORE digital collages of the party pictures my boy Jeffy-Pop took:

Unpictured: A NEW! NYE tradition, The Gherkin Toss.  This year the toss was deftly performed by pitcher: Lindsay and catcher (and birthday girl!!), Jessica.  Nicely done, ladies, your physical prowess shall be fondly mused upon throughout 2011.

Here’s to you 2011, I’m gonna lick your eyeballs and make you my prom date.  Eat your hearts out, y’all,

Last week my man-friend, Thomas and I had some cohorts over to the Shangri-Lounge for drinking, dining and debauchery (what some people refer to as a “potluck”).  The theme was middle eastern food and I must say we had quite a spread.  See for yourself:

Coconut chicken curry, vegetable curry, basmati rice, garlic na’an, hummus spread cucumbers with yogurt sauce and relish tray (because EVERYONE loves pickles).  Bar master James concocted a chai tea, coconut milk, honey and Cutty Sark cocktail that tickled my taste buds in a delightful way.

For the veggie curry I found this really neat basic “curry anything” recipe that lets you create the perfect curry to suit your tastes.  Give it a try, mine turned out pretty well if I do say so myself (I put in zucchini, cauliflower and green peas).

After dinner Jeff brought over his hookah and WIDE assortment of flavored tobaccos for the smoking.  All in all I totally over indulged in everything, had an amazing time.  The day after is a whole other story.

Eat your hearts out,

As promised, I present to you some better quality photographs of the new place.  All paint was the decision of someone else (yes, even the lovely mango colored living room).  As I mentioned in my last post, nesting has yet to fully occur but I feel these photos convey a general sense of how kickass the space is:

The Living room:

The Bedroom:

The Kitchen and Dining Room (my faves):

I’m pretty in love with the place, it’s got a lot of the quirks of an old house, but overall I think I’ll feel right at home here.  If you would like to give me a very generous house warming gift of oh, say a tasty bottle of wine or chic floor lamp I’d be VERY receptive.

Eat your heart out,
